Bringing Art to Life as a Psychic Medium at “Portraits as Portals”

Art has always been a portal to the soul, a canvas capturing the ineffable and the unseen. At Art Windsor Essex Gallery, the exhibit “Portraits as Portals” pushes these boundaries further, blending the world of visual art with the mystical insights of psychic mediumship. An exhibit curated by Jennifer Fisher and Jim Drobnick, this unique project offers a profound exploration of the unseen dimensions of art.

My journey into the “Portraits as Portals” exhibit began with a chance meeting with Jennifer Fisher at the Toronto Meta Expo in November 2022. An Art history professor at York University and also a renowned curator, with a vision to bridge the gap between art and the metaphysical. I was invited to participate in this groundbreaking project, setting the stage for several opportunities to read in galleries across Southern Ontario.

The concept of a psychic medium reading art is both intriguing and unique in the Art world (at least from what I can tell with the little knowledge I have on the subject). Unlike traditional art appreciation, which relies on visual and historical analysis, Jennifer’s vision asked us to tap into the spiritual and energetic essence of each piece. By connecting with the energies and spirits associated with not only the artwork, but also the artist themselves, hidden narratives are uncovered and profound insights add a new layer of understanding to the art.

Over the course of my involvement with “Portraits as Portals,” I have participated in four separate sitting sessions at galleries around Southern Ontario. Each session has been a unique experience, revealing the diverse and rich tapestry of stories embedded in the artwork. These sessions are not just readings; they are immersive experiences that allow me the opportunity to interact with the art, the artist, the space, and the energies within.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this project is the request to read art of unknown artists. These pieces, devoid of documented history, present a blank canvas for me to explore, and ultimately compare to the information brought forth by other readers. This allowed me to bring to light origins, emotions, and stories that have long been forgotten. This process not only enriches the viewer’s experience but also gives these mysterious artworks a voice and a history.

The “Portraits as Portals” exhibit features an array of captivating artworks, each with its own unique story. Among the highlights is a haunting portrait that I was stopped from reading. And another representing the deep bonds of siblings that remains even across oceans.

Best Picture I could take with the available lighting.

Its an odd feeling walking into the room seeing the impact that your previously recorded readings have, just continuously playing in a loop. The gallery is very dark and only the art itself can be seen, along with the screens of the mediums reading, which are lit up. This provided me with a hidden opportunity to see the impact of my readings on the visitors. I heard firsthand accounts of visitors on the impact the readings had on different ways to understand the artwork, creating a deeper and more personal connection. They also highlighted the emotional resonance of my readings in particular, with words like “enlightening” and “transformative experience” (OMG 😊).

Working with curators Jennifer Fisher and Jim Drobnick has been a fulfilling and enriching experience for me. Their vision and support have allowed me to explore and expand my abilities in new and exciting ways, all the while honouring my working style. The collaborative process has not only enhanced the exhibit but hopefully opens up new avenues for integrating psychic mediumship into the art world.

My work in “Portraits as Portals” underscores the profound impact that psychic readings can have on art appreciation. By unveiling the hidden stories and energies within the artwork,  a multi-dimensional experience is created, that goes beyond the visual. This approach fosters a deeper, more holistic understanding of art, inviting viewers to engage with it on an emotional and spiritual level.
